What is it that makes REC Innovation Labs Special:

The REC Innovation Lab is a community business incubator at San Diego Miramar Community College dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to helping founders solve problems by launching high-growth startups.

There are many incubator programs in California, but often some groups are left out when it comes to joining them. Graduating students lose access to university-based programs, and many professional incubators are priced too high for entrepreneurs from underrepresented communities.  Women and people of color are rarely targeted for inclusion and the focus is typically on later-stage companies that can show traction.

The Regional Entrepreneurship Center - REC Innovation Lab at Miramar College was created to change those dynamics by providing critical resources to entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds so they can follow their passions and turn ideas into startups. We prepare students who need support at the earliest stages of the business and get them ready to launch or transfer into other incubators.

The focus of the REC is on helping diverse founders to start scalable, high-growth startups. What sets the REC apart from other incubators is the sheer volume of resources that are available to entrepreneurs.  Just like the advice we give to student founders; we leverage other people’s resources and use bootstrapping rather than paying out of pocket.  The average startup receives over $66,000 worth of resources each semester.

What you'll love about working at REC Innovation Lab:

The REC is devoted to providing critical resources, and promoting the inclusion of, entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented communities so they can pursue their passions and develop businesses from the idea stage onwards.

Many of our students are veterans, minorities, women, first-generation college students, and people who would otherwise not have access to incubator programs.  Working at the REC, you are making a difference in the lives of student founders in such an impactful and profound way.  We get a front row seat as regular people turn their ideas into companies, and turn these companies into jobs and wealth for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Several of the student founders have launched companies that are now valued at over several million dollars.  Many have raised funds from Angel investors. They are winning local competitions. Three of our students are going to be on the next season of Shark Tank.  Through this job you will be making a profound impact on people's lives.

Here's what you'll be doing:

  • Managing a high volume of emails, direct messages, social media inquiries, and all other messages sent to the director
  • Using the systems that have been initiated, create new systems where needed, keep track of what is effective and not
  • Scheduling and facilitating meetings
  • Codifying all of the processes into operations manuals
  • Reporting on KPIs.
  • Ability to work mostly from home 5 hours a day/ 5 days a week. Combination of on-campus and remote work

Here are the skills you'll need to have:

  • Some experience working in a busy professional office setting
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Organized, self-starter, and can operate effectively with limited supervision
  • Comfortable making decisions when there is ambiguity and no “playbook” to follow
  • Value and appreciate diversity
  • Be ready to work hard and "hit the ground running"
  • Bonus, someone who has entrepreneurship training or wants to start their own company someday.

In Case You Missed It, Here's what we offer:

  • Flexible Work Schedule

  • Tuition Assistance
  • Professional Development Opportunities
  • Paid Sick and Vacation Leave
